Hi I am Tim Moorhouse BSc MNIMH and I have been keeping this blog since I set up my w ebsite just after I was on Coutryfile in October 2009.

Unfortunatly I am not yet good enough with Wordpress to set it up so that it has the same appearance as my website. This means that if you have come to this page from that site, DON’T PANIC, it is still part of that website but has lots more stuff on it!

This is an opportunity to have a short consultation with me to explore your health issues, for me to do any relevant examinations, make suggestions for herbs and other advice depending on your individual needs and generally discuss with you what herbal medicine might be able to offer you.

Call in at the shop or ring Anna on 881 6399 to make an appointment. £15 for a half hour consultation. (If you decide to then have a full initial consultation this will be taken of the price.)

There is a Farmers Market and Craft Fair on at the Horse & Jockey just round the corner on Chorlton Green that day. So a nice lunch…bit of shopping….watch how to make your own cough syrup…good day out?

Green Man now on Deansgate

Since the new year I have had a wonderful new office right in the middle of Manchester. It is on the 3 floor of Milton Hall at 244 Deansgate, M3 4BG. I have so far mainly been using it for my counselling practice but am hoping that patients will want to come and see me there also.

I am still seeing people in Whalley Range, have no plans to move from there at the moment, but thought it would be good to show you my lovely new space.

Herbalists Gain Statutory Regulation

Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, announced to Parliament Yesterday that herbal medicine practitioners will be regulated from April 2012. The four UK health departments have agreed that the Health Professions Council (HPC) should hold a statutory register of practitioners who supply unlicensed herbal medicines to people to enable the supply of herbal medicines to continue after 30 April 2011. This will ensure that practitioners have met specified registration standards. Practitioner regulation will be underpinned by medicines legislation which will provide further safeguards to protect public health.

This means that even though many herbs will not be available over the counter, they will still be available as part of the individualised herbal medicines we prescribe to our patients. It will also provide the public with a profession that they know they can trust. Every herbalist on the register will have achieved a certain level of training and clinical experience; be expected to maintain and develop their knowledge through continuing professional development; and be accountable for their practice.

We will also have the status of authorised healthcare professional. This will mean that we have the right to practice on a much firmer footing than we do now. Safeguarding that herbal medicine that has been practised on these islands for millennia will continue into the future.

However I guess we have to wait and see how this new legislation may impact on the way we practice. I imagine there will be some more debate ahead!
